Sadly, hunger in our community continues to grow and promises to worsen as funding for food for those in need gets cut and food bank resources continue to diminish. On July 2, the New Mexican published an article entitled “Report: Two in five New Mexico households struggle to afford basics.” Part of it is copied here:

• More than 2 in 5 New Mexico residents struggled to afford basics like housing, healthcare, food and transportation in 2024

• About 17% of New Mexico households were living below the federal poverty level in 2024

• Another 26% were making more than the federal poverty level but not enough to afford a bare-bones “survival budget.”  

• That means 42% households in the state — or more than 356,000 — weren’t able to afford basic necessities in 2024.

Thankfully, each of us can make a difference by contributing to the Food Depot’s efforts to feed hungry people throughout Northern New Mexico. The Southeast Neighborhood Association (SENA) has been participating since 2016! This year, as last year, the goal is $500,000 or 2 million meals.  $1 = 4 meals.
